On 22 September the IAC’s small satellite ALISIO-1 imaged oil from the tanker Caroline Bezengi near Oman’s Al Hallaniyat islands, a spill estimated in August at about 400 km². Its DRAGO-2 infrared camera looks at 1,100 and 1,600 nm, wavelengths where oil mixed with water stands out. Our take: a satellite built in Tenerife doing real environmental monitoring is exactly what such programmes promise.
