The Italian Space Agency is hosting the ACDC_Q 2026 national conference on magnetometers for space on 8 and 9 October at its “Giuseppe Colombo” Space Centre in Matera. Sixteen talks across six themes, from 14 organisations, cover diamond NV-centre sensors, SQUIDs, optically pumped magnetometers, spintronic devices and MEMS. The meeting is part of ACDC_Q, a 48-month Horizon Europe project coordinated by Belgium’s IMEC with about €5 million of EU money, which started on 1 January 2025. Its goal is to make diamond quantum sensors smaller, tougher and more sensitive, with space magnetometry among three target uses. ASI supplies the mission requirements and tunes the diamond samples by irradiating them with pulsed electron beams. Our take: quantum sensors are leaving the lab, and measuring magnetic fields in space is one of the first places they could earn their keep.
