Wildfires forced the evacuation of NASA’s deep-space antennas near Madrid

In July, fires near Madrid emptied the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex, one of only three sites worldwide that talk to NASA’s distant probes; an ESA ground station in Spain was also threatened. Both returned to service without major damage. Our take: every signal from Mars or Juice passes through a handful of dishes on the ground, and this summer showed how exposed they are.
