Spain puts €1 billion on the table to bring a giant telescope to La Palma

Spain offered up to €1 billion to move the Thirty Meter Telescope from Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, blocked by protests since 2014, to La Palma in the Canary Islands, its alternative site since 2016. The US science foundation has leaned toward the rival Giant Magellan Telescope. Our take: if it lands, the Canaries would host one of the sharpest eyes on the sky for decades.
