Using the ALMA radio telescope, astronomers from the University of Milan and Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Astronomy imaged the young WISPIT 2 system, roughly 430 light-years away, with two growing planets. For the first time the gas spiralling around a forming planet was seen directly, as simulations had predicted. The star is only about 5.4 million years old. Our take: planet birth stops being a computer model and becomes a picture.
