An IAC team led by Carlos Marrero-de la Rosa used ultra-deep images from the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma to size IC 1101 in the Abell 2029 cluster, about a billion light-years away. Its main body spans some 1.7 million light-years, roughly ten times the Milky Way, with about 3.4 trillion solar masses of stars. The study is in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Our take: a modest telescope plus patience still beats records.
