Open Cosmos, the satellite maker that counts Portugal among its four core locations, will deploy at least 192 satellites for its ConnectedCosmos low-Earth-orbit network by 2030, Portuguese business daily ECO reported on 5 October. The first launches are due later in 2026, with more than 96 satellites in orbit by the end of 2028, aimed at governments, institutions and companies that need secure, resilient connectivity. The plan follows a €300 million funding round; the company’s four factories in the UK, Greece, Spain and Portugal employ about 400 people and can turn out one satellite a day. In Portugal it has about 50 staff, integrates satellites in Coimbra and plans to invest €50 million and double its local team to around 100. Our take: Portugal has a real stake in this would-be European rival to Starlink; the question is how many of the 192 will actually leave Coimbra.
