With JWST’s MIRI instrument, a University of Chicago team found that HD 3167 b, a rocky planet about 154 light-years away that circles its star in roughly a day, keeps an atmosphere although it is the coolest known lava world. The authors suggest most lava worlds may hold on to their air, much like the young Earth during its magma-ocean stage. Our take: a rare glimpse of what our own planet may have looked like before it cooled.
