The Deep Space Food Challenge asked for a full food system for 15 people over 500 Martian days. First prize ($300,000) went to Chinyere Ukeje of Philadelphia for a design mixing farming, fermentation and fungi that grows half the crew’s food on site. Our take: Mars is as much a kitchen problem as a rocket problem.
